This topographical map is a detailed plan of the city of Middelburg, Netherlands, titled Oud Middelburg (Old Middelburg). The map presents a bird's-eye view of the city, clearly showing its circular defensive walls, surrounding moats, and the intricate internal street plan. A central waterway divides the city, and the surrounding polder lands and fortifications are delineated. The title and a city crest are inscribed on a decorative block in the lower right corner.
Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian and author, primarily known for his comprehensive work Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland (New Chronicle of Zeeland), published in 1696. Although he commissioned the prints and was the author, not the engraver, he is the central figure associated with the production and publication of this map, which was created to accurately document the history and topography of the province of Zeeland.
