This zoological engraving, identified as Plate 331, illustrates the two primary species of camel. The upper figure (2) is "Le Dromadaire" (The Dromedary), or one-humped camel. The lower figure (1) is "Le Chameau" (The Camel), or two-humped Bactrian camel. This plate is a characteristic illustration from Buffon's monumental 18th-century work, Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière.
Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a highly influential French naturalist, mathematician, and encyclopedist of the Enlightenment era. As the intendant (director) of the Jardin du Roi in Paris, he authored and supervised the creation of his monumental 36-volume Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière. This work became a cornerstone of natural history study, prized for its comprehensive descriptions and its vast collection of high-quality engraved plates.
