Bilder Louis-Auguste de Sainson (1800–1887) – House of a Mandarin in China – Lithograph (c. 1834)
Beskrivning
This topographical and ethnographic print is titled Maison d’un Mandarin en Chine (House of a Mandarin in China). The scene depicts a tranquil, yet active, bank along a river or canal, showing several traditional, low-slung Chinese structures nestled among trees. Several figures are visible near the water's edge and near the buildings. A prominent mast or flagpole rises above the buildings. The highly detailed rendering of the architecture and landscape suggests its origin in an official travel publication.
Louis-Auguste de Sainson was a French draughtsman and artist. He served as the official illustrator on the circumnavigation voyage of the corvette L'Astrolabe (1826–1829) under Jules Dumont d'Urville. Although L'Astrolabe's main focus was the Pacific, the expedition passed through Southeast Asia and the East Indies, and de Sainson's drawings provided the basis for lithographs and engravings published in the official accounts, such as Voyage pittoresque autour du monde (1834), which often included views of the places visited along the trade routes, like China.
