Beskrivning
This topographical and ethnographic print is titled View of Prise a Pulo-Penang.The highly detailed rendering of the architecture and landscape suggests its origin in an official travel publication.
Louis-Auguste de Sainson was a French draughtsman and artist. He served as the official illustrator on the circumnavigation voyage of the corvette L'Astrolabe (1826–1829) under Jules Dumont d'Urville. Although L'Astrolabe's main focus was the Pacific, the expedition passed through Southeast Asia and the East Indies, and de Sainson's drawings provided the basis for lithographs and engravings published in the official accounts, such as Voyage pittoresque autour du monde (1834), which often included views of the places visited along the trade routes, like China.
