Beskrivning
This ethnographic portrait of the Savage of New Caledonia throwing a Zagaie. This image originated from the French voyage of exploration led by Antoine Bruni d'Entrecasteaux (1791–1794), who searched for the lost expedition of La Pérouse. The illustration was drawn by the expedition's artist, Jean Piron, to document the people encountered in the Pacific.
Jean Piron was a French draughtsman and artist who sailed as the official artist on the D'Entrecasteaux expedition. His detailed drawings of Pacific peoples, costumes, and landscapes provided important visual records for the official account of the voyage, which was published posthumously. His work is valued for its contribution to early ethnographic documentation.
