Bilder John Webber (1751–1793) – View of a Hawaiian Sacred Site (Heiau) on Kauai – Engraving (1784)
Beskrivning
This is an 18th-century engraving created from a drawing by John Webber, the artist on Captain Cook's third voyage. The image depicts a sacred site, or heiau, in the Hawaiian Islands. The scene is located on the island of Kauai (historically known as Atooi) and shows a walled enclosure with a thatch-roofed structure and a tall, scaffold-like tower, set against a backdrop of mountains and palm trees. It was published in the official account of Cook's voyage in 1784.
John Webber was an English painter and engraver who served as the official artist on Captain James Cook's third and final voyage (1776–1780). His primary task was to record the topography, people, and events encountered. After returning to England, Webber oversaw the production of the official engravings, such as this one, for the published account of Cook's voyage, which provided a vast visual record of the Pacific to the European world.
