John Webber was an English painter and engraver who served as the official artist on Captain James Cook's third and final voyage (1776–1780). His primary task was to record the topography, people, and events encountered. After returning to England, Webber oversaw the production of the official engravings, such as this one, for the published account of Cook's voyage, which provided a vast visual record of the Pacific to the European world.
