Claude Bernard was one of the most influential French physiologists of the 19th century, often considered the founder of modern experimental medicine. His anatomical and physiological work, particularly on the nervous and vascular systems, required detailed visual documentation. Although Bernard was a physiologist, his name is often associated with comprehensive medical atlases and textbooks published during his active period. The plate is signed "Huterin sculp.," indicating the engraver.
