This work originates from one of Jacob Cats' popular emblem books Silenus Alcibiadis, Sive Proteus.
Jacob Cats was a highly influential Dutch poet, humorist, and politician of the Dutch Golden Age. Known as "Father Cats," he was famous for his didactic and popular emblem books, which used illustrations and accompanying poetry to convey moral lessons, primarily focused on love, marriage, and domestic life. His works were widely read across the Netherlands.
