Jacob Cats was an highly influential Dutch poet, humorist, and politician of the Dutch Golden Age. Known as "Father Cats," he was famous for his popular and widely read emblem books, which employed symbolic illustrations and accompanying texts to convey moral lessons, often focusing on domestic virtues, love, and life guidance. His works were tremendously popular and helped define 17th-century Dutch culture.
