Bilder Marten de Vos (1532–1603), after – Allegory of the Church as the Bride of Christ – Engraving (c. 1579)
Beskrivning
This print depicts a Biblical or allegorical scene often interpreted as the Allegory of the Church as the Bride of Christ. The central focus is a kneeling woman, representing the Church (Ecclesia), who is being crowned or wedded by the standing figure of Christ. They are positioned beneath a tree, while a group of figures, representing Church dignitaries or witnesses, stand on either side. The scene is executed in a highly detailed, Mannerist style, and includes text in the lower margin. The composition is originally by Marten de Vos and was engraved by a member of the Sadeler family, as suggested by the user-provided context. I will use the established painter/designer's name as the primary attribution, as is common practice for such reproductive engravings.
Marten de Vos was a Flemish painter and draftsman of the late Renaissance and Mannerist periods. He was one of the last major figures of the Antwerp School before the rise of Rubens. De Vos was extremely prolific, producing a vast number of designs for printmakers, particularly religious and allegorical subjects, which were widely circulated throughout Europe by engravers like the Sadeler family.
