Bilder Cornelis Cort (1533–1578) – Christ and the Woman of Samaria at the Well – Engraving (1574)
Beskrivning
This print depicts the Biblical scene of Christ and the Woman of Samaria at Jacob's Well, as recounted in the Gospel of John (Chapter 4). Christ is seated on the right, gesturing towards the woman who stands with a water vessel beside the ornate wellhead. The detailed landscape and distant townscape place the figures in a larger narrative setting. The print is executed in a highly detailed, Mannerist style, and is a fine example of reproductive engraving based on a design by a major Flemish master. The original design for this engraving is by Marten de Vos.
Cornelis Cort was a highly influential Dutch draftsman and engraver of the Renaissance period. He specialized in producing reproductive prints after the works of prominent painters such as Titian, Federico Zuccaro, and Marten de Vos. Cort was instrumental in establishing an influential style of reproductive engraving characterized by its clarity and expressive use of line, and he founded a major school of engraving in Rome.
