This geographical print is a nautical chart and Plan of the Roadstead and City of Veracruz). The map details the harbor (roadstead), including bathymetric soundings (depth measurements), and the coastal features around the city of La Vera-Cruz in Mexico. The important fort of S. Jean d'Ulva (San Juan de Ulúa) is prominently marked at the entrance to the port. A key (Renvoi) in the lower left corner identifies key buildings within the city, such as the Governor's house and the Custom House. A large compass rose dominates the center. This map was published to accompany an encyclopedic travel publication.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a highly influential French hydrographer and geographer of the 18th century. He was Chief Hydrographer for the French Navy and a member of the Académie des Sciences. Bellin produced a prodigious volume of high-quality, scientifically accurate charts and maps for the French government and for encyclopedic works like Abbé Prévost's Histoire générale des voyages. His maps are renowned for their clear engraving and significant contribution to the European cartography of the world.
