This geographical print is a nautical chart and regional Map of the Coasts of Cochinchina, Tonquin, and Part of those of China). The map focuses on the coastal features, bays, and offshore islands of Tonquin (Tonkin, Northern Vietnam), Cochinchine (Southern Vietnam), and the adjacent Cote de la Chine (Coast of China). Prominent features include the Golphe de Tonquin (Gulf of Tonkin) and the Isle de Hainam. A decorative cartouche in the lower right corner frames the title. The map includes a compass rose and is covered with a graticule (longitude and latitude lines). This map was published to accompany an encyclopedic travel publication.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a highly influential French hydrographer and geographer of the 18th century. He was Chief Hydrographer for the French Navy and a member of the Académie des Sciences. Bellin produced a prodigious volume of high-quality, scientifically accurate charts and maps for the French government and for encyclopedic works like Abbé Prévost's Histoire générale des voyages. His maps are renowned for their clear engraving and significant contribution to the European cartography of the world.
