This zoological illustration depicts a Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides), a small heron species. The bird is shown standing in profile, displaying its characteristic breeding plumage, with a buff or pale yellow neck and chest and streaked crown feathers. The back is a light brown color, and the wings and lower body are white. The long, slender legs and the greenish-blue bill are accented with hand-coloring. This print originates from one of Francis Orpen Morris's popular natural history works, A History of British Birds.
Francis Orpen Morris was an Irish clergyman, naturalist, and popular entomologist and ornithologist. He was an influential figure in promoting natural history to the Victorian public. He is best known for his series of popular, multi-volume books featuring detailed, often hand-colored, illustrations, including A History of British Birds (1851-1857), from which this plate originates.
