This zoological print illustrates two types of domestic sheep: the Ram of the Indies ("Bélier des Indes") and the Morvant ("Le Morvant"). Both animals are depicted in profile, standing on a patch of green ground, and the print has been finished with hand-coloring. This illustration was created for a major French natural history publication, an expanded or revised edition of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's seminal work, "Histoire Naturelle."
Jean-Baptiste Meunier was a French illustrator, draftsman, and artist specializing in natural history subjects during the nineteenth century. He is known for providing the drawings for lithographic plates used in important French scientific atlases and texts of the era, including his contributions to updated editions of Buffon's comprehensive works on mammals and other fauna.
