Beskrivning
This zoological print features two subjects: the Ram of Iceland ("Le Bélier d’Islande") and the Ewe of Iceland ("La Brebis d’Islande"). The subjects are depicted in profile, illustrating the Icelandic breed of sheep with their notable horns and shaggy coats, standing on a patch of green ground. This hand-colored lithograph served as an illustration for an edition of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon’s major natural history work, compiled or expanded upon by contemporary naturalists.
Jean-Baptiste Meunier was a French artist and draftsman who specialized in creating drawings for natural history illustrations during the nineteenth century. His work is prominently featured in the lithographic plates accompanying large-scale scientific publications of the period, contributing to the visual documentation of mammals and other fauna in expanded editions of foundational texts like Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle."
