The central map shows the geography, divided into administrative districts and cantons, with the boundaries highlighted in color. Surrounding the map is an elaborate engraved border featuring historical and statistical text panels, vignettes of local scenery, products (such as wine and flowers), and busts of notable local figures, all characteristic of Levasseur's work. The map was published as part of the "Atlas National Illustré des 86 Départements et des Possessions de la France."
Victor Levasseur was a French engineer, cartographer, and engraver of the mid-nineteenth century, known for holding several important geographical and educational posts in France. He is most famous for his "Atlas National Illustré," which combined precise geographical information with extensive decorative borders illustrating the history, economy, and culture of each French department, making his maps both scholarly references and visually striking works of art.
