This work is an elaborate and decorative map of the French department of Marne. The central map shows the department's geographical and administrative divisions, highlighted with distinct colors. The map is framed by an ornate engraved border filled with textual information on statistics, history, and resources, as well as detailed vignettes illustrating local products and scenes, notably including wine production. This plate was featured in Levasseur’s comprehensive national work, the "Atlas National Illustré des 86 Départements et des Possessions de la France."
Victor Levasseur was a French cartographer, engineer, and engraver of the nineteenth century. He is most recognized for his monumental "Atlas National Illustré," which utilized a highly artistic and informational style, setting geographical maps within detailed decorative borders that cataloged the economy, culture, and history of each French department. He held respected positions related to geography and education in France.
