This work is a decorative map of Oceania ("Océanie"), which includes Australia and the islands of the Pacific. The central geographical map shows the region's main islands and political divisions, with sections of Australia highlighted by hand-coloring. The map is framed by an elaborate engraved border that features vignettes illustrating the region's flora, fauna, and indigenous people, as well as a scene of a coastline with a fort and shipping, all characteristic of the illustrative style of Levasseur's atlas plates. This map was published in the Atlas Universel Illustré.
Victor Levasseur was a French cartographer, engineer, and engraver active during the nineteenth century. He is widely recognized for his Atlas National Illustré and similar international projects, which combined precise geographical information with extensive, richly detailed decorative borders that cataloged the culture, history, and natural history of the featured regions. His maps are noted for their high artistic and informational quality.
