Bilder Lodovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – Map of Philippeville (Namur, Belgium) – Engraving (1613)
Beskrivning
This print is a detailed, bird's-eye plan showing the fortified city of Philippeville in the province of Namur, Belgium. The map prominently displays the town's defensive star-shaped layout, characteristic of 16th and 17th-century military architecture, with streets radiating from a central point, surrounded by moats and ramparts. This map was published as a city plan illustration in an edition of Lodovico Guicciardini's influential descriptive work on the Low Countries, "Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi."
Lodovico Guicciardini was an Italian writer, historian, and merchant who spent a significant part of his life in Antwerp. His major work, "Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi," was an early and extremely popular comprehensive description of the Low Countries (which included modern Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg). This book was frequently reissued throughout the 17th century and is highly valued for its detailed text and the accompanying collection of accurate engraved city plans and views.
