This print is a detailed, bird's-eye plan showing the fortified city of Beaumont in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. The map illustrates the medieval street layout, the surrounding defensive walls, and the external moats and waterways. The central title cartouche identifies the city as "Beaumont" and the region as "hainaut." This city plan illustration was published in an edition of Lodovico Guicciardini's highly popular descriptive work on the Low Countries, "Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi."

Lodovico Guicciardini was an Italian writer, historian, and merchant who lived in Antwerp for many years. His principal work, "Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi," was a crucial early description of the Low Countries (including modern Belgium and the Netherlands). The book was frequently reissued throughout the 17th century and is celebrated for its accurate text and the accompanying collection of finely executed engraved city plans and topographical views.
