Bilder Lodovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – Map of Saint-Omer, France – Engraving (1613)
Beskrivning
This print is a detailed, bird's-eye plan showing the fortified city of Saint-Omer (labeled "S. OMER"), now located in France but historically part of the Low Countries. The map illustrates the city's densely packed urban area, its surrounding medieval walls, towers, and the external moat system, with ships and windmills indicating its strategic and commercial importance. This city plan illustration was published in an edition of Lodovico Guicciardini's highly popular descriptive work on the region, "Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi."
Lodovico Guicciardini was an Italian writer, historian, and merchant who lived and worked in Antwerp for many years. His principal work, "Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi," was a crucial early description of the Low Countries (including parts of modern France, Belgium, and the Netherlands). The book was continuously reissued throughout the 17th century and is highly valued for its accurate text and the accompanying collection of finely executed engraved city plans and topographical views.
