This print depicts the biblical scene of Christ's Descent into Limbo (Harrowing of Hell). The scene shows Christ at the center, holding the banner of the Resurrection, stepping down into a dark, cavernous space filled with nude figures representing the souls of the righteous dead awaiting redemption, including Adam and Eve. Dragons, demons, and other monstrous figures inhabit the dark background, illustrating the gates of Hell being broken. This engraving is a religious print created for wider dissemination, typical of the narrative and dramatic works produced by the Galle publishing house.

Philips Galle was a highly influential Dutch engraver, print dealer, and publisher of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He established a major print publishing business in Antwerp, producing numerous engravings after designs by prominent artists such as Maerten van Heemskerck, Jan van der Straet (Stradanus), and Johannes Stradanus. His output included historical, mythological, and religious subjects, contributing significantly to the dissemination of Netherlandish Mannerism.
