Beskrivning
This print illustrates the biblical scene of The Kiss of Judas and the Arrest of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. Christ stands centrally as Judas leans in to identify him with a kiss, surrounded by a crowd of soldiers carrying spears and torches. In the foreground, Saint Peter is typically shown kneeling and sheathing his sword after having cut off the ear of Malchus, the high priest's servant. The background depicts the surrounding garden and the distant city of Jerusalem under an ominous night sky. This engraving is a religious print created for the market by the influential Galle publishing house.
Philips Galle was a highly influential Dutch engraver, print dealer, and publisher active in Antwerp during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He established a major print publishing house that produced numerous high-quality engravings, often after designs by leading Mannerist artists like Maerten van Heemskerck. His extensive output covered historical, mythological, and religious subjects, significantly influencing print culture across Europe.
