Beskrivning

This print depicts a religious scene showing a saint or hermit, identified in the inscription as Saint Epiphanius. The figure is shown kneeling beneath a large, gnarled tree, intensely praying or contemplating. In the background, another monastic figure is seen standing in a landscape that includes a distant fortified town nestled among mountains. The scene is rich with natural detail, characteristic of the Flemish landscape tradition. This work is a devotional print created by the prolific Sadeler family.

Johannes Sadeler I was a Flemish printmaker, publisher, and draftsman who belonged to the highly influential Sadeler family of artists. He established a major international print publishing business, known for his masterful engraving technique and his extensive production of religious and mythological prints after designs by prominent contemporary artists, circulating Mannerist styles throughout Europe.
