This is a detailed bird's-eye view map of the fortified town of Chimay, historically located in the County of Hainaut (now Belgium). The map illustrates the town's dense layout encircled by extensive defensive walls and moats, characteristic of Renaissance military architecture. The print includes miniature figures in the foreground, a common decorative element in city atlases used to illustrate local inhabitants. This print was published as part of the monumental atlas of European cities, Civitates Orbis Terrarum.

Georg Braun was a German cartographer, editor, and cleric, serving as the primary editor for the six-volume Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1572–1617), the first systematic atlas of city plans worldwide. Franz Hogenberg was a Flemish engraver and cartographer who was responsible for engraving the majority of the copperplates used in the atlas, often based on drawings and surveys collected by other contemporary artists and surveyors.
