Bilder Cornelis Bloemaert II (1603–1692) – The Halcyons (Les Alcyons) – Engraving (c. 1650)
Beskrivning
This engraving illustrates the classical Greek myth of the Halcyons, referring to the tragic story of Ceyx and Alcyone, as recounted in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The composition is centered on a powerfully muscular, nude male figure, Aeolus, King of the Winds, who stands on a rocky shore, dramatically holding a trident or spear aloft to summon the storm. Below him, distressed figures are consumed by the turbulent waters, while birds and a nest float on the surface, representing the later transformation of the lovers into kingfishers.
Cornelis Bloemaert II was a Dutch engraver, celebrated for his skilled reproduction of the works of prominent Baroque and Renaissance painters, including artists from the Roman school. He was the son of the painter Abraham Bloemaert and spent much of his career in Paris and Rome, contributing significantly to the dissemination of European masterworks through the medium of copperplate engraving.
