Bilder Cornelis Bloemaert II (1603–1692) – The Sacrificial Taurus in the Capitoline Museum – Engraving (c. 1650)
Beskrivning
This detailed engraving reproduces a classical Roman sacrificial relief located in the Capitoline Museum, depicting the preparation of a bull (Taurus) for sacrifice in a crowded scene set against a background of classical architecture. Numerous figures are involved in the strenuous effort of subduing the bull, while priests, assistants, and observers stand nearby. Two young male figures on the left carry a large decorative round shield or mirror. The original Roman sculpture documented the rituals of state sacrifice.
Cornelis Bloemaert II was a Dutch engraver, celebrated for his skilled reproduction of the works of prominent Baroque and Renaissance painters, and for documenting classical sculpture. He was highly active in Paris and Rome during the mid-17th century and contributed significantly to the widespread dissemination of European masterworks and classical antiquities through his copperplate engravings.
