Beskrivning

This copperplate engraving is a double-page geographical map of Japan and the Korean Peninsula, extending to show the Tartary mainland. The map illustrates the state of European knowledge of East Asian geography in the mid-18th century, showing key cities, rivers, and coastal features. The title is set within a large, elaborate cartouche featuring East Asian figures and an umbrella, and the map itself is partially colored to highlight regions and routes.

Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a highly prolific and important French cartographer and publisher of the late 18th century. Working from Paris, he was known for producing numerous detailed plans and military maps for various European courts, including a significant series of maps detailing the military theaters of Europe and large-scale atlases covering regions like Germany and Scandinavia. His works are noted for their clear delineation of geography and political subdivisions.
