Bilder Jan van der Straet (1523–1605) – Mourning Figures at the Tomb of Christ (Lamentation) – Copperplate engraving (c. 1585)
Beskrivning
This copperplate engraving depicts a deeply somber religious scene, likely the Lamentation or mourning at the tomb following the Crucifixion. A close group of figures, heavily draped with their faces mostly obscured by cowls, are gathered before the dark entrance of the tomb. In the background, the scene is set on a desolate path leading up to Calvary, where the three crosses stand silhouetted against the sky, with the distant city visible on the right. Latin verses relating to the subject are inscribed below the image.
Jan van der Straet, known as Stradanus, was a Flemish Mannerist artist who worked extensively in Florence for the Medici court, specializing in paintings, tapestry designs, and large-scale allegories. He is renowned for his prolific career designing prints, which were widely circulated across Europe through major publishing houses like that of Philippe Galle. Philippe Galle was a key figure in Flemish printmaking, operating as a successful engraver, publisher, and print dealer in Antwerp, notably publishing many of the designs of Stradanus and other prominent artists.
