Bilder Jan van der Straet (1523–1605) – The Entombment of Christ – Copperplate engraving (c. 1585)
Beskrivning
This copperplate engraving depicts the solemn religious scene of the Entombment of Christ. Christ's body is shown being carried on a shroud toward a tomb entrance carved into a rock face. A central group of mourning figures, including the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene, are gathered in deep sorrow. In the background, the scene contrasts the intimacy of the grief with the distant hill of Calvary, where the empty crosses stand, and the distant city skyline. Latin text related to the sorrow of the event is inscribed below.
Jan van der Straet, known as Stradanus, was a Flemish Mannerist artist who worked extensively in Florence for the Medici court, specializing in paintings, tapestry designs, and large-scale allegories. He is renowned for his prolific career designing prints, which were widely circulated across Europe through major publishing houses like that of Philippe Galle. Philippe Galle was a key figure in Flemish printmaking, operating as a successful engraver, publisher, and print dealer in Antwerp, notably publishing many of the designs of Stradanus and other prominent artists.
