Bilder Jan van der Straet (1523–1605) – The Descent from the Cross (Deposition) – Copperplate engraving (c. 1585)
Beskrivning
This copperplate engraving depicts the dramatic religious scene of the Descent from the Cross (Deposition of Christ). Christ's body is shown being carefully lowered from the central cross via ladders by assisting figures, including Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. The scene is highly charged with emotion, centered on the grieving Virgin Mary kneeling at the base. The composition is spatially complex, set against a background featuring the hill of Calvary, a small building, and distant landscape elements.
Jan van der Straet, known as Stradanus, was a Flemish Mannerist artist who worked extensively in Florence for the Medici court, specializing in paintings, tapestry designs, and large-scale allegories. He is renowned for his prolific career designing prints, which were widely circulated across Europe through major publishing houses like that of Philippe Galle. Philippe Galle was a key figure in Flemish printmaking, operating as a successful engraver, publisher, and print dealer in Antwerp, notably publishing many of the designs of Stradanus and other prominent artists.
