This copperplate engraving is a detailed plan view of the fortified city of Cambrai, France, as it appeared in the late 16th century. The illustration meticulously depicts the intricate street network and the urban fabric within the city walls, which are characterized by elaborate star-shaped bastions reflecting Renaissance military engineering. The plan includes two heraldic shields and a key listing important locations and features, all set against a neutral background. The design is based on surveys commissioned for a geographical description of the Low Countries.
Lodovico Guicciardini was an Italian merchant, historian, and humanist who lived and worked in Antwerp. He is renowned for his historical and geographical treatise, Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi, first published in 1567. This monumental work contained numerous accurate and highly influential maps and city plans of the region, which served as sources for subsequent major cartographic publications, including the celebrated Civitates Orbis Terrarum.
