Bilder Lodovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – Map of Mons, Belgium – Copperplate engraving (c. 1570)
Beskrivning
This copperplate engraving is a detailed plan view of the fortified city of Mons, Belgium, the historic capital of the County of Hainaut. The map illustrates the dense, irregular street pattern of the medieval city surrounded by extensive, angled defensive walls and a moat. Decorative elements include coats of arms in the upper corners, a cartouche containing a key of numbered sites, and costumed figures in the foreground, reflecting the city's status in the late 16th century. The map originates from the first major descriptive survey of the Low Countries.
Lodovico Guicciardini was an Italian merchant, historian, and humanist who lived and worked in Antwerp. He is renowned for his historical and geographical treatise, Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi, first published in 1567. This monumental work contained numerous accurate and highly influential maps and city plans of the region, which served as sources for subsequent major cartographic publications, including the celebrated Civitates Orbis Terrarum.
