This copperplate engraving is a highly detailed geographical map combining the large regions of Australia and New Zealand onto a single sheet. The map is divided into four main sections, showing Western Australia, Eastern Australia, Tasmania, and the North and South Islands of New Zealand, along with an inset of the Auckland area. The map adheres to the scientific standards of 19th-century German cartography, accurately illustrating coastlines, internal administrative divisions, topography through fine hachures, and numerous place names reflecting colonial exploration. The map was published in Stieler's Hand-Atlas.

August Petermann was a highly influential German cartographer who held a leading role in modernizing cartographic practices in the mid-19th century. He worked extensively for the Justus Perthes publishing house, making significant contributions to Stieler's Hand-Atlas, which was renowned for its scientific accuracy and clarity. Petermann was particularly noted for his specialized maps focusing on geographical exploration and scientific data, transforming atlas
production into a dynamic and authoritative field.
