Beskrivning
This copperplate engraving is a comprehensive astronomical chart illustrating the Planetary System of the Sun (Solar System), featuring a large central diagram that shows the orbits of the planets, including Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The chart provides detailed scientific data in accompanying tables, listing orbital periods, distances, and velocities. Inset diagrams provide visual comparisons of the relative sizes of the major planets and their moons. The entire chart reflects the detailed and precise scientific cartography typical of the mid-19th century.
Adolf Stieler was a highly influential German cartographer whose name is synonymous with the Hand-Atlas, a pivotal work in modern cartography. His atlas was celebrated for its accuracy, clarity, and systematic approach to geological, astronomical, and political mapping. Though Stieler himself died in 1836, the atlas was continually updated and published by the Justus Perthes house, remaining the standard reference work in Germany for decades.
