Bilder Jan Goeree (1670–1731) – Scenes of Ancient Combat: Postulatich and Catervarii – Engraving (c. 1720)
Beskrivning
This engraving features two scenes related to ancient military practices and ritualized combat. The upper panel depicts two armored figures engaged in a ceremonial or symbolic duel, potentially reflecting a custom known as Postulatich. The lower panel illustrates a dense, chaotic battle involving both infantry and cavalry, characteristic of a skirmish or an engagement by irregular forces known as Catervarii. The print is a visual reconstruction drawn from historical accounts, used to illustrate military tactics and customs in an early eighteenth century antiquarian text.
