Bilder Jacob Cats (1577–1660) – Emblem of the Palm Trees: Live in Harmony – Engraving (c. 1620)
Beskrivning
This emblem illustrates the value of concord and fidelity, conveyed by the Latin motto "Live in Harmony." The central engraving shows two palm trees leaning toward each other across a stream, an allegory often used in early modern emblem books to represent mutual affection, especially in marriage, as palms were mythologically believed to pine for their partners. The print is augmented by moralizing Dutch verse and supporting Latin mottos, consistent with the ethical and didactic nature of the seventeenth century emblem book genre.
Jacob Cats was a highly celebrated Dutch poet, moralist, and politician of the Golden Age. Known as 'Father Cats' for his accessible, moralizing verse, he authored numerous influential works, most famously his emblem books, which combined intricate engravings with vernacular poetry and Latin maxims. His publications were immensely popular and shaped Dutch domestic morality and literature for centuries.
