Beskrivning
This Mannerist engraving depicts the mythological figure Bacchus, the god of wine, represented as a muscular, semi-nude man crowned with grapevines, holding aloft a decorative vessel. He is shown with a youthful attendant or follower, and both are surrounded by grapes and foliage. The central composition is contained within an elaborate oval frame, featuring flanking decorative cartouches that include images of classical vessels. This work is characteristic of the highly stylized and muscular figures typical of the Mannerist period in Northern Europe.
Hendrick Goltzius was a leading Dutch painter, draftsman, and printmaker of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, considered the most important exponent of Northern Mannerism. Known for his exceptional technical virtuosity as an engraver, he produced works characterized by dramatic light and shadow and exaggerated, highly detailed muscular forms. Goltzius was instrumental in defining the international style of Mannerism through his influential prints, which were widely circulated and copied across Europe.
