Bilder Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609–1664) – Shepherds Driving a Herd of Cattle and Sheep – Etching (Mid-17th Century)
Beskrivning
This etching depicts a busy pastoral scene where a large herd of sheep and cattle, including a prominent ox, is being driven through a classical landscape. The central action focuses on the animals crossing a low stream or path, guided by two young figures on the left. On the right, a dramatically posed, semi-nude shepherd figure gestures into the distance. The composition is characteristic of Castiglione's work, blending idealized classical figures with detailed, lively depictions of animals and rustic life.
Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, known as Il Grechetto, was a prominent Italian painter, draftsman, and etcher of the Baroque era, primarily active in Rome, Genoa, and Naples. He is celebrated for pioneering the oil sketch technique in Italy and is considered one of the most innovative etchers of the 17th century. Castiglione specialized in pastoral scenes, mythological subjects, and biblical narratives, often featuring large numbers of animals and figures with exotic or theatrical costumes. His distinctive style and use of dramatic light strongly influenced later artists.
