Bilder Jean-Baptiste Massé (1687–1767) – Henry IV Deliberates on His Future Marriage – Engraving (18th Century)
Beskrivning
This large allegorical engraving illustrates King Henry IV of France standing in full armor, contemplating his second marriage. In the center, a winged figure presents him with a portrait, presumably of Marie de' Medici, his future wife. Henry IV is flanked by Mars, the God of War, while winged putti play with discarded military armor, symbolizing the shift from conflict to dynastic peace. Above, Jupiter and Juno observe the political and marital decision, lending divine sanction to the event.
Jean-Baptiste Massé was a French painter, draftsman, and miniaturist primarily active during the late Baroque and Rococo periods. He held the position of miniature painter to King Louis XV and was a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Massé is best remembered for his detailed reproductions of works by other masters, notably his series of engravings after the celebrated paintings by Paolo Veronese, and for his own intricate history and allegorical compositions, such as this one.
