Beskrivning
This large-scale reproductive engraving depicts the biblical account of Esther being crowned Queen by King Ahasuerus (Assuerus) in a grand architectural setting. The king is shown placing the diadem upon the kneeling Esther, surrounded by a large and diverse retinue of figures, including courtiers and attendants, positioned on the palace steps and overlooking balconies. The composition is based on the painting by the French master François de Troy, showcasing the dramatic and luxurious style of French history painting.
François de Troy was a French painter of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, specializing in portraiture and large-scale history paintings. He was a successful member and later Director of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. De Troy was highly sought after by the French court, creating numerous portraits that captured the elegant style of the French Regency era. His historical and religious compositions, such as the series depicting the life of Esther, were widely reproduced by prominent engravers of his time.
