Beskrivning

This copperplate engraving is a large ethnographic plate depicting a double-hulled outrigger canoe, known as a pirogue, anchored near a tropical shore in the Friendly Islands. The canoe is manned by several indigenous figures, set against a backdrop of palm trees and a distant sailing ship. The print documents South Pacific travel and local craftsmanship.

Jean Piron was a French painter who served as an artist on the D'Entrecasteaux expedition, an 18th-century voyage of discovery that charted coastlines and documented natural history in the South Pacific and Australia. His on-site sketches formed the basis for many published engravings in the subsequent official expedition accounts.
