Beskrivning

This copperplate engraving is a portrait illustrating a man from Oonalashka in the Aleutian Islands. The figure is shown wearing a striped garment and a large, horizontally striped visor hat. The portrait documents the appearance and traditional dress encountered by the European expedition in the North Pacific region.

John Webber was an English artist who served as the official artist aboard HMS Resolution during Captain James Cook’s third and final voyage of exploration in the Pacific. His detailed drawings of landscapes, cultures, and people from the voyage were later engraved and published, establishing an important visual record of the late 18th-century world.
