This copperplate engraving depicts a detailed view of the Piazza del Popolo in Rome. The composition highlights the monumental square, featuring the central obelisk and the two symmetrical domed churches, Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli, framing the entrance to the city. The work belongs to a series of detailed Roman city views.

Giovanni Domenico Cassini was an Italian astronomer, engineer, and mathematician who was active in Rome before moving to France. He is chiefly remembered for his major contributions to astronomy, including the discovery of four satellites of Saturn and the Cassini Division, but also engaged in cartography and engineering. This work relates to the documentation of ancient and monumental architectural structures in Rome.
