Beskrivning

This copperplate engraving is an archaeological plate displaying five detailed studies of mythological and classical figures. The composition features a large Egyptian Sphinx statue, a spotted, human-headed creature, and two circular insets showing winged animals and classical iconography taken from coins or gems. The print originated from a monumental historical and archaeological publication.

Bernard de Montfaucon was a French Benedictine monk, scholar, and paleographer. He is celebrated for his vast contributions to the study of classical and Egyptian antiquities, most notably his comprehensive and heavily illustrated multi-volume work, L'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures.
