This copper engraving depicts the Christian hermit Saint Artus kneeling in devotion outside a cave in a rugged, mountainous wilderness. The robed figure is engaged in writing or drawing on the rock face. Books, a cross, and a jug lie nearby, symbolizing his ascetic life of study and prayer, having voluntarily rejected worldly honors. The deep engraving technique and detailed rocky landscape are characteristic of late 16th-century Northern Mannerism.

Maerten de Vos was a highly influential Flemish painter and draftsman of the late 16th century, working in the Mannerist style. Although primarily a painter, he is best known for the hundreds of designs he created for copperplate engravers, which popularized his religious and allegorical subjects across Europe. He was a central figure in the Antwerp school of painting.
