Beskrivning

This copper engraving depicts the Christian hermit Saint Benedict kneeling in prayer within the dark opening of a cave in a rugged, mountainous landscape. The figure is shown gazing upward at a crucifix, symbolizing his devotion and ascetic life far from the city. The background features a dramatic waterfall and an arched bridge, executed with the dense, detailed linework characteristic of late 16th-century Northern Mannerism.

Maerten de Vos was a highly influential Flemish painter and draftsman of the late 16th century, working in the Mannerist style. Although primarily a painter, he is best known for the hundreds of designs he created for copperplate engravers, which popularized his religious and allegorical subjects across Europe. He was a central figure in the Antwerp school of painting.
