Beskrivning

This copper engraving is a detailed geographical map showing the coastal and inland regions of Peru, specifically the area corresponding to the Audience of Lima. The map displays the topography, rivers, and settlements along the Pacific coast and into the Andes mountains. The map was drawn using reports from missionaries and the maps of the French Marine, and was published in a large-scale French historical and geographical compendium documenting the geography of South America.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin was an eminent French hydrographer, geographer, and royal censor, serving as the official cartographer for the French Marine during the 18th century. He is celebrated for his vast output of highly accurate sea charts and detailed maps of the world, which were essential to French naval and colonial expansion and set the standard for cartography throughout the Age of Enlightenment.
